Understanding the Impacts on Google Page Ranking System

Page Rank is basically a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weight to a web page with the purpose of measuring its relative importance within the set. Page Rank elevates two things:- firstly, the number of links there are to a web page and secondly, the quality of links from other sites. Today's webmasters struggle hard to attain a better page rank, but have you ever thought as to how important is a page rank really? This piece of writing may help you to have a clear concept about the page rank and its worth.

PageRank depends on the uniquely democratic nature of the web that uses the vast link structure as an indicator of an individual’s page value. When one page links to another page, it effectively casts a vote for the other page. Google calculates the importance of a page from the votes casted for it. The rank of a particular page is roughly based upon the total number of inbound links as well as the ranks of the pages providing the links. This matters as it is one factor that denotes a pages’ rank, but it should always be remembered that it isn’t the only factor.

Factors that have an Impact on PageRank

  • Inbound links: Overall they are very important except banned sites. A link to a page is a vote for that page and it is considered valuable by Google. The more voting links, the stronger the page.
  • New pages can decrease the PageRank: PageRank loss can also occur due to a drop in their own PR, and this may send a rippling effect of a low rank throughout the entire network.
  • Links from high quality related sites are very important. More closely related the page is, the higher is the page rank. Links to a good site reveals that the site is useful to the visitors.
  • Links to banned sites can have a reverse effect on PageRank. Illegal activities may penalize your PageRank and possibly ban your site.
  •  Myth: Higher PageRank in Google, the better the results. Google examines your incoming links, and links that relate to the specific keywords help to achieve a higher ranking for that keyword.
  • Related higher ranking web-sites count stronger. One way inbound links from websites that are related to the topic of your website will help you gain a higher Page Rank.
  • Different pages may have different rankings. Search engines crawl and then index the web pages and not the sites, so PageRanks may vary from page to page.

Few Myths about PageRank

  • Content is not important when PageRank is considered.
  • High PageRank guarantees higher search ranking.
  • Wikipedia links improve PageRank.
  • Listing in DMOZ and Yahoo Gives your site a special PR bonus.
  • Sub-directories have a lower PageRank than root-directories.
  • Meta Tags improve the PageRank.PageRank can be said to be an approximation of the quality of a web page that has nothing to do with the measuring of the topical relevance of a web page. It is important, but not worth obsessing over. There are other factors like the content, meta tags, keyword density etc that help to seek a higher ranking. Simply building a good website containing rich and relevant content can attract the visitors and elevate your PageRank.
